At Our Lady of Mount Carmel, technology is integrated into all subjects. To support the learning process, OLMC School houses a substantial collection of computing devices including iPads, Chromebooks and Apple laptop computers for student use. All learning spaces are equipped with interactive whiteboards connected to Apple TV, document readers and networked printers. The school is completely wireless with plenty of wifi access points. Students in grades 3-8 use Google Classroom to share documents with teachers and peers.

JavaScript Enrichment Course

Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, Javascript coding was added to the enrichment curriculum. Each middle school grade spent a trimester with Javascript and Coding as a weekly 1.5 hour class session. This program is expected to continue when full time in-person learning resumes.

Students start with basic logic problem solving involved in telling a computer exactly what to do to get a specific result, then move into the foundational elements of programming like functions, variables, and conditionals. After completing logic puzzles in educational coding games, students make a paint app using JavaScript.

This is great preparation for other coding classes, whether in person or online.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will become familiar with the basics of programming in general, and client side web development specifically.
  • Students will create several projects using JavaScript and other web technologies.
  • Students will develop an appreciation for the powerful tools at the fingertips of programmers.
